Garage Getting Old? 2 Tips On How You Can Make The Garage Look Better And Last Longer

by Sheila Berry

If you have had your garage for some time and it is looking old, there are many things you can do to make it look new again. There are also things you can do to help the garage last longer. Below are two of these things to help you get started.

1. Make Repairs

Before you do anything, you need to make any needed repairs. First inspect the exterior walls to look for cracks. If there are small cracks you can purchase a repair kit at a home improvement store to repair this. This kit has a type of solution that you fill the crack with. You can use a tool to smooth the surface. Let it completely dry and you will not know there was a crack there. Do this for each crack you have for both interior and exterior of your garage. The kit will come with complete instructions.

Hire a garage door contractor to inspect the door for any type of problems. For example, there could be problems with the belt system that lowers and closes the door, as well as the rollers that are on the belts. If the garage door does not open and close properly, the belts and rollers will need to be replaced. There are many other things the garage door contractor will inspect for you.

2. Paint the Garage

Once all cracks are repaired you can paint the garage.  If the walls are dirty first clean them with a standard cleaner and a garden hose. Scrape away any loose paint with a paint scraper. Before you start painting let the walls completely dry.

Purchase exterior paint as this will hold up to the elements much better. Also, purchase a sealant for the garage walls. Put a coat of sealant on the walls first and let it completely dry. This sealant will smooth out the walls, so the paint will look much better. The sealant also helps protect the walls from moisture. Talk with the salesperson where you purchase the paint and sealant, and they can help you choose the right type. If you have never painted before you should consider hiring a professional to do this for you.

If you do not like the color of the walls, choose a different color! Make sure what you choose goes well with the color of your home, however. Talk with the garage door repair contractor you hire about this information and they can give you more details, as well as other tips to help your garage last longer.
