Getting A New Garage Door? Tips To Make It More Secure

by Sheila Berry

If you're getting a new garage door, one of your concerns may be how you can make it more secure. While it's easy to assume that the garage is safe when the door is down, that is not always the case. Here are some tips that you can use to ensure that nobody can get in without your permission.

Don't Leave The Opener In Your Vehicle

If you have a one car garage with other cars that park outside of it, you run the risk of someone easily breaking into your garage in a way that you wouldn't suspect. Many people leave the garage door opener in their vehicle, or program the button built into the vehicle. While this is very convenient, it leaves your garage vulnerable.

It's very easy for somebody to break into a vehicle and use the opener to gain access to your garage. This can all happen in a manner of seconds, which is enough time for somebody to get inside and steal something valuable. You are essentially leaving the keys to your garage right outside the door, making you are target for someone breaking in.

Don't Allow Access To The Emergency Release

Another way somebody can easily gain access to a garage is through the emergency release on the garage door. While this release is meant to detach the garage door in an emergency, like in the event of a power outage so you can get your car in or out, it can also be used to break into your garage. If a criminal can break a nearby window, they can use an object to pull down on the release mechanism. This will unhook the door from the opener and allow it to be easily lifted.

Thankfully, there are some solutions to this problem, If you haven't selected the style of your garage door yet, consider one that doesn't have windows. Without windows, there is no way to reach the emergency release. You can also have a deadbolt installed on the door that latches from inside. You can use this to secure the door shut when you know you'll be away from your home for a while, such as when on vacation. It's also possible to use cable ties to secure the cord to the opener, which would require scissors to cut the cable tie and release the door.
